greetings garden family & friends,

this is absolutely the best time of year for gardening in Alabama, as it is warm with just enough of a breeze to make gardening tasks a delight.

we are still harvesting okra (above and below), now with our plants cresting at a good seven feet!*

also our sungold tomatoes are still going strong with a bumper crop well established. we dug around the plants this morning, added generous amounts of compost at their base and fed them a brew of compost tea with fish emulsion. this should ensure harvests well into October.

and the RED GIANT MUSTARD mustard seeds planted the first week of September have sprouted:

for more information and tips on fall gardening, do join us this Saturday, September 17, 2011 (11am – 1pm) for our FALL PLANTING PLANNING PARTY and HEALTHY EATING ON A BUDGET workshop to learn all things garden for a bountiful autumn harvest.

Ms. Jennifer Ropa from Greater Birmingham Community Food Partners will lead the workshop on healthy eating, and Mr. Myron Pierre will share his tips on making the best compost in Alabama. [*bonus: WE Gardens okra will be featured in the jumbalaya Ama is cooking up for lunch!]

also, don’t  forget to mark your calendar for the 3RD ANNUAL COLLARD GREEN COOK-OFF and WELLNESS EXPO! October 15, 2011, 12 pm – 5pm.

More details to come...
